NYC Selected Gallery Guide: May, 2025

The Hole (Tribeca):: Grant Stoops, Untitled, 2025, acrylic on panel, 40 x 30 inches, 102 x 76 cm; on view in “LFG”

May means a slew of Art Fairs take place in New York, but don’t forget to visit the galleries. A few have closed since our last guide—Dinner, Spanierman, and Pocket Utopia are all taking a break. Nathalie Karg is on hiatus. On a brighter note (literally), be sure to see LFG” at The Hole, a group exhibition featuring blinking LED lights, painting, sculpture, and installation informed by video game aesthetics. McBride/Dillman, the newest gallery to open on Henry Street, launches this month with an exhibition of Jessica Alazraki’s heartfelt domestic interiors. Benny’s Video is opening on Varick Street in Bushwick, with work by Mary Helena Clark and Joy Episalla. Also in Brooklyn, at Art Cake, go see Breath,” a big group show curated by poet and art writer John Yau. At Platform, Tessa Greene O’Brien, an artist I met when I was visiting MFA studios at the Maine College of Art, has curated Pushing Daisies.” Randy Wray has a show called “Prehistory” opening at Karma in the East Village, and Tony Huynh’s modest yet compelling paintings will be on view at Pablo’s Birthday, now located on Hudson Street in Tribeca. “Wish Maker,” Salman Toor’s first major presentation in New York since his 2020 Whitney exhibition, is spread across Luhring Augustine’s Chelsea and Tribeca galleries. Browse the listings below and make a plan. As always, there’s a lot to see — and not nearly enough time. –Sharon Butler
