Hello 2024! Last year the art-fair spaceship landed in NYC during September, stealing thunder from the local galleries. Is January now the best month for solo exhibitions? Lots of our favorite local artists are having openings: Joan Snyder at Canada, Jane Swavely at Magenta Plains, Sharon Horvath at Lori Bookstein, Greg Drassler at Betty Cuningham, Bill Carroll at Elizabeth Harris, and Tamara Gonzales at Klaus von Nichtssagend. Former Bushwickers Julie Torres and Ellen Letcher are returning from Hudson for a show at the newly reopened Pocket Utopia, which is back in the old Henry Street location. In Brooklyn, Minus Space, long rumored to be closing, presents a solo show of Sharon Brant’s new work in what may be their final show in DUMBO. In Tribeca, go see Molly Warnock’s latest project. She has curated a Simon Hantaï exhibition in Timothy Taylor’s newish Leonard Street space. Jack Shainman’s huge new Tribeca gallery opens at 46 Lafayette with an immersive video installation by Richard Mosse. A couple of small artist-run galleries are opening, too — Cate Holt’s Springs Projects in DUMBO, and JJ MURPHY GALLERY on the Lower East Side. JJ maintains Dag Central, a beloved Instagram art review project, and he tells me that the gallery will open on Stanton Street in early February.
