We’re up in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. The floor of Dudek’s studio is covered wall-to-wall with objects. One can ascertain individual sculptures, or perhaps parts of sculptures that might become sculptures one day. I ask if this is how it always is.
Contributed by Karlyn Benson / It’s been a rough few weeks on many levels, from the fires in Los Angeles to the drastic policy changes taking place in Washington. It can be hard to stay focused and motivated. If you need to feel uplifted and inspired, I urge you to visit a gallery or museum this weekend. There are dozens of exciting shows to see and new spaces to visit, including The International Museum of Dinnerware Design and the HoloCenter located around the corner from the newly reopened Center for Photography (CPW) in Kingston. Contributed by Karlyn Benson / December is the month for small works and holiday group shows, such as LABspace’s annual “HOLIDAY” show featuring 400 artists and “ALL small” at Pamela Salisbury. There are a few weeks left to see Chie Fueki’s “Petal Storm Memory and Non-Objectified” at Kino Saito; “When the Spirit Moves You” and Eve Biddle’s “I have time for death and rebirth” at Geary; and “All At Once” at SEPTEMBER. December 6 is the opening of “The 5 by 7 Show” at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts, marking the 25th anniversary of this popular fundraising exhibition. On December 7, Front Room Gallery celebrates their 25th anniversary with an exhibition of gallery artists. For this edition of the guide I have also included artist and maker fairs and pop up shows taking place at galleries and art spaces throughout the region. Shop local and give the gift of art this season!

Contributed by Karlyn Benson / Please join us this weekend, October 19th and 20th, for the second annual Two Coats of Paint Hudson Valley Gallery Crawl. It’s the perfect excuse to hit the road, from Nyack to Kinderhook, and explore this stunning landscape during peak fall foliage. I’ll be co-hosting this year with Two Coats of Paint founder and publisher Sharon Butler and editor Jonathan Stevenson. The 27 galleries we’ve selected feature a mix of familiar names and emerging artists, established galleries and newer spaces. In addition, there are a number of opening receptions and artist talks happening during the weekend. Please join us for the kick-off party on Friday, October 18, 5-8 pm, at Headstone Gallery, located at 28 Hurley Ave in Kingston, where maps for self-guided tours will be available. Contributed by Karlyn Benson / As the summer winds down it is a great time to escape the heat by exploring art spaces in the Catskills region, Western Connecticut, and the Berkshires. There are some notable group exhibitions opening or continuing in August including TWENTY/20 at the Athens Cultural Center, The Summer Disaster Show 2 at Private Public in Hudson, Groundswell at Alexander Gray Associates, Germantown, and Back and Forth, Between Names at Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh….
Contributed by David Carrier / Guillaume Lethière (1760–1832) was a very good French neoclassical painter. Respected and honored in the French art world, he served as director of the French Academy in Rome and was admired as a teacher. Consistent with this stature, the eponymous exhibition currently on view at The Clark Art Institute is robustly curated. In addition to abundantly contextualizing Lethière’s work, the exhibition materials document a life that embodied much of France’s complicated colonial history.
Contributed by Kari Adelaide Razdow / Daniel Giordano’s sculptures, some of them currently on view at MassMoCA and Visitor Center in Newburgh, NY, it is possible to decipher a deeply personal language ensconced in forms and symbols. His works defy easy classification while honoring memories that inhabit his industrially tinged studio in Newburgh, NY, once his family’s clothing factory. His freewheeling use of materials and evocative titles suggest a comprehensive embrace of sculpture as a repository of humor, narrative, and poetics, as well as a means of integration and rupture alike. There is a logic underpinning the wild combinations and ambiguous forms in his work. It resonates with echoes from the past and suggestions of the future, like a postcard from someone we have not yet met.
